Lately in the news, the US Navy have announced, via a press release, that it will finally move away from a 19th century tradition and fully embrace lower case letters. Up until now, all inter-navy communication has happened in capital letters, a remnant from the old teletype machines which didn’t have lower case letters. Amazingly, the Navy’s communication systems are so ingrained in this tradition, that it will take years to adapt all of their tools to recognise sentence case. Despite the work it will take to sort all this out, they estimate that they will still save $15 annually by switching to email.
All this will no doubt ease reading and comprehension as navy officers will NO LONGER HAVE THE IMPRESSION THAT SOMEONE IS SHOUTING AT THEM ALL THE TIME.
